What are the differences between designing for a print product and a digital product?

The differences between print and digital design are not only changing how the user engages with the design but it is also changing what the designer has to account for. Print products use CMY, and the designer has to make note of the paper being used and is sometimes subjected to the wrath of a printer. Digital Products use RGB, and designers have to make sure they look good on different types of screens (tablets, phones, computers, etc.) and have to account for the accessibility of digital products.

What are you most interested in learning in this class?

I am very interested in learning how to make a website for my portfolio. I want it to be fun to interact with so even if someone doesn't remember my name, they will remember the work I have created.

How do you define “Interaction Design”?

Interaction design is a user-based type of design that engages with how the user interacts with websites and digital formats of design.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

My aesthetic is a mix between vintage and modern. I enjoy implementing hand-drawn or handmade elements in my designs, and I tend to use limited color palettes with colorful yet dulled-down colors. In terms of type, I prefer larger San-serif typefaces.

What objects inspire your aesthetic?
  • Objects from my childhood (toys or comic books)
  • Movie posters, superheroes, and books
  • Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
  • Antiques and vintage items
  • Handmade illustrations
What does “UX and UI” mean to you (if anything)?

I have some experience with user interaction through my past graphic design projects. We made toys and packaging that had to account for how someone could interact with the toy.

What was your earliest design memory?

My earliest memory was in fourth grade when I created a poster to lift some spirits during state testing. That was the first time I had to pay attention to how text and illustration interacted together.

When was the last time you saw digital design in the world that surprised you?

I was at the airport and the huge list of flights and locations surprised me because it was a lot of information in a very inefficient manner. There was a lot of room for improvement with how the important information was organized.
